Oscars 2011

The 83rd Academy Awards took place last night with all the glitz and glamour that makes the Oscars one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year. Rita and I have each picked out our very favourite hits (and less favourite misses) from the night. Here’s how we read last night’s glamour:

Tríona: Mila Kunis was one of the first to arrive on the red carpet last night, and she certainly set the bar high in the style stakes. I don’t think anyone else was able to match the gorgeousness of her Elie Saab dress. The lavendar gown complemented her skin tone and dark wavy locks, which she loosely swept up behind. Mila looked stunning yet comfortable, not something that can be said of all the ladies on the red carpet. Cate Blanchett also wore lavendar but her dress was of the Givenchy kind. She absolutely wowed in the beaded number with unusual sleeves and lots of great detail on the back. I must confess here I am slightly biased when it comes to Mila and Kate’s dresses… this is because they’re from my two most favourite collections from Haute Couture week which you may recall we featured a a few weeks ago. So it was to my delight when these two ladies walked the red carpet. last night.

Biases aside, there were a few other interesting choices and some pretty looks. Micelle williams looked very pretty in a white beaded Chanel gown, and she is still absolutely rocking that pixie crop. Gwyenth Palthrow made a really interesting choice of dress, and I have to say I think it worked. Her Calvin Klien number reminded me of a slinky cool suit of armour. Jennifer Lawrence went for a red hot look in Calvin Klien. Lawrence made such a transformation from her character in the gripping ‘Winter’s Bone’ that she was almost unrecognisable last night.

There is no doubt that Natalie Portman looked as beautiful as always, however I must admit I was alittle disappointed with her Rodarte dress. For me the dress she wore to the Spirit awards was far more interesting. However on the positives she deservedly won best-actress and her earrings were gorgeous.

Best jewellery of the night went to Celine Dion, the long sleeved Armani dress looked beautiful on the recent mom of twins, but the gorgeous pendant set off the whole look.

Tríona’s best dressed goes too… Mila Kunis with Cate Blanchett taking second place.

Rita: Yes, last night’s Oscar red carpet certainly was glamorous but I could not help notice that the standard of style was well below previous years and was often bordering on Helena Bonham Carter rather than Marilyn Monroe.

There were two extremes on last night’s red carpet, with vibrant tones from red to orange to more neutral, soft ethereal tones.

Sandra Bullock looked elegant and graceful in Vera Wang- in saying that, it was not a patch on her Jenny Packham gown from the Golden Globes, but still a very good choice. Host, Anne Hathaway’s Valentino gown was a bit of a miss for me. I did not like the random roses blooming from the sides and the material looked a bit like masking tape. Worst of all had to have been Jennifer Hudson’s deep tangerine Versace mess. Seriously what was going on here?! It was blinding and nearly took over the whole red carpet! There was no design to it and it just looked plain awkward.

Halle Berry’s Marchesa shimmering nude gown was one of my fashion highlights. I also loved Scarlett Johansson’s overall look. Her Dolce and Gabbana dress was unusual with a nice burgundy shade which was complimented by her nice crop of soft curls.

Cate Blanchett’s Givency Couture gown has split opinion. I was not too sure about it at first but the more I see it, the more I love it! The same cannot be said for Michelle William’s Chanel frock. It was a bit too casual which, I felt, was accentuated by the t-shirt style sleeves. Mila Kunis looked trendy, yet classy, in Elie Saab which was another of my few favorites from the night.

Rita’s award for best dressed goes too… Halle Berry with Mila Kunis in close second.

The Oscar show is broadcast on RTE tonight at 9pm, so let us know what you think of the style and oscar winners.
